Textured Orange Lily

Textured Orange Lily

If you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for a moment.”

I shot this lily at my favourite in North Burlington.  There were hundreds of them, but I picked a few good blooms.  This was one of them.

I am experimenting with new creative software and have found it good to work and easy to use.  In fact a number of my previous posting were created using this software.  This time I added a background texture as a change of pace.

Please enjoy.  (July 19, 2008)

Queen Anne's Lace

Queen Anne’s lace dandies up a ditch,
like embroidered hankies in a farmer’s pocket.

Terri Kirby Erickson

This was shot a few years ago in the late fall.  All of the blooms are gone and all that is left is the skeleton of the flower.  An extreme macro shot using my 60mm macro lens.  Processed with On1's  Photo Raw 2018.   Notice the "spidy" webs around the base of the flower.   (Feb 2018)

Where Is The Fish

My life is what a salmon must feel like. They are always going upstream, against the current.

I was told that this was the area that the salmon do their fall runs.  Well, after about an hour or so I did not see a single fish.  Not that I was actually wanting to catch one.  Was more interested in photographing a "jumping" Salmon.  (October 2017)

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a giant moving math problem.

— John van der Zee

I shot this one in 2006 while visiting my son.  I thought it was time to finally  show this photo.  It has been sitting in my archives.

The story about this shot is simple.  I was on a "bay Cruise" and caught this shot with my 60mm macro lens.  I then processed it for a wide frame shot.  This is (was) the results.

Sometimes you have to go back and take a second look at some of the older shots, enjoy.

A Man And His Dog

The love of a dog is a pure thing. He gives you a trust which is total. You must not betray it.

 Michel Houellebecq

While on my trip to San Francisco, recently, with my son and his wife, we did some walks to other parts of our local area.  This was a busy day and people were all around us shopping or just gathering around. The man and his dog caught my eye.  ....a photo opportunity....

The dog was very patient while waiting for his treats.  A great opportunity to capture this man and his dog.

Wild Water Rose

The best way to killing a rose is to force it open when it is still only
the promise of a bud.
Jos_ Saramago

Another from a few evenings ago. This rose plant/bush was growing right at the edge of the pond so I figured it liked the water more than the land. (June 2017)

Purple Water Flower

My daughter really likes purple lilacs, so I am sure she would like this purple flower.

A few evenings ago I noticed this tiny purple flower growing by a ponds edge.  Used my 70mm - 300mm, fully zoomed to capture this dainty bloom.  (June 2017)

Moth On A Burr

“The strongest and most mysterious weeds often have things to teach us.”

"and that is never fly into a burr" ---Me

This poor moth flew too close to a burr plant and got caught for its efforts.  Captured this shot, once again in a favourite spot in North Burlington.  I just happened to see it as I was driving by, so I backed up to see what was happening.  Sure enough this moth had flown too close to the burr and got caught on the "hooks".  I watch for a while and figured it was worth a shot.  This is the results.  (June 2017)

Goose On A Pond

What a dull world if we knew all about geese!

A few weeks ago I was looking for a subjsect to photograph and  ended up at a favourite spot.  There was a lone goose floating on the pond that did not pay any attention to me.  I put on my 300mm lens and shot a number of pictures.  This one with the aid of a few enhancement was my favourite shot.  (May 2017)

Christmas Day 2016

The airplane stays up because it doesn't have the time to fall.
— Orville Wright

Christmas day 2016 was a dismal, windy day.  I had nothing to do until the evening so I wandered down to the lake to see if there was anything interesting there.

I set up my camera and the "long" lens.  There was a bit of haze along the horizon and I just "clicked" away.  As I was processing a shot, I was a bit dismayed as there was a large spec of dirt in the upper left of the shot.  So i zoomed in to see what it was.  Low and behold it was an aircraft that had just departed Toronto Island airport.  I had to leave this in the photo. Old House

Old houses are full with memories and that's why they resist to collapse!

Mehmet Murat Il

This house sits on the corner of Walkers and Second Line in north Burlington.  I have been trying to get a really good shot of the house, a few weeks ago I succeeded.  It is really getting rough and looks like it will fall down in the near future, or, will be torn down.

A favourite location of mine.  (Feb 2017)

Photographing A Photographer

“To me, photography is an art of observation.
It’s about finding something interesting in an ordinary place…
I’ve found it has little to do with the things you see
 and
everything to do with the way you see them.”

Elliott Erwitt

I was watching this lady taking photos of the ducks and seagulls.  It was interesting how concentrated she was.  The shot was a natural. (Feb 2017)

Burlington Pier

Beach Footsteps

“Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some stay for awhile and leave footprints on our hearts.
And we are never, ever the same.”

It was late fall, no snow yet.  The air was crisp, but no ice.  I took a walk along the empty beach and noticed that I was leaving foot prints.  There were waves on the lake and a pretty blue sky.  The wind was a bit gusty and the "early" footprints were already starting to fill in with the blowing sand.  So I aimed the camera and took some shots.  After some post processing I figured this was a good photo.  (November 2016)

Snow Squall Over Bronte Creek

“A cold wind was blowing from the north, and it made the trees rustle like living things.”

— George R.R. Martin

A snow squall moved through Burlington while I was out today.  This is what crossing Bronte Creek looked like at Cedar Springs Road this afternoon.  (Jan 2017)

"Much That Was Lost This Year"

Rather than post a photo....I decided to post a paper by Brendan Buchard explaining   "Much That  Was Lost This Year".   Let's hope that he is correct....

...j.    (01/01/2017)

Much was lost this year.

Let us hope that the ideal of being a gentleman has not gone extinct too.

The gentleman is honest, kind and strong in character. His actions show a deep respect for women and care for all. He looks people in the eye and welcomes them into the moment with genuine warmth. He is courteous, so he does not lash out like a child, call others bad names, say crude things, stew rumor, or minimize others. He issues no fake gestures and promises, does no pandering for position and popularity.

He is centered and real and so he is disarming; he creates the safety in which others freely speak and learn and be. He is generous in giving time and praise. His duty is above self-promotion, so in his presence others are empowered to rise and lead.

He is stoically loyal in relationships but wildly independent in thought. His opinion is formed slowly, built on the foundation of listening and careful study. He admits his wrongs and in doing so does not seek to make the other wrong.

He is quick to forgive. He does not incite the crowd with anger simply because he can. He can stare into the abyss of fear and intolerance and not be consumed because he recognizes his own weaknesses, sees good in others, and trusts the better angels of our nature shall prevail.

He has humility; he is above no one but his own weaker self. He does not turn his nose at words that sound like work: discipline, duty, dedication, devotion.

For this, he is distinguished among men. Yet he is rarely boastful except in celebrating others.

He is comfortable with himself and finds pleasure in simple things and wit in all occasions. He faces adversity with dignity and boldness. He has the good sense to know when to quit and avoid a needless fight and still the spirit to be committed and firm when moral influence is needed.

In the steady manner in which he faces all challenge, he inspires others to be thoughtful, to believe in their own powers, to persevere. His good manners make him a welcomed guest. His reverence for life makes him a cherished friend.
His example is rare. But it is needed.

So let us celebrate him. Let us resurrect him in our time of mean obliviousness. Let us ask who in the new generation will carry the torch of the Gentleman.

Brendan Buchard.....

Fall At The Docks

The days were getting shorter, a bit of nip in the air, but this couple was enjoying the view at the Burlington Boating club docks.  All of the boats had been moved to storage and the leaves were changed for Autumn.

Another shot from last October during the knee recovery.  It was a wonderful fall.  (October 2015)

Picking Up Chestnuts

For man, autumn is a time of harvest, of gathering together. For nature, it is a time of sowing, of scattering abroad.
Edwin Way Teale
Last October, 2015, after my knees were replaced I ventured out to the lakeshore for some walking (hobbling) and found the big Chestnut tree by the entrance had gone to seed.  A large amount of Chestnuts lay on the ground, most had "popped" out of their protective covering.
A lady was harvesting the wind falls and I asked if I could take a photo. She agreed. This was the result.  (Oct 2015)

Dark Skies (not the TV program)

"Don't knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn't start a conversation if it didn't change once in a while. "

Kin Hubbard
Today is Christmas Day 2016.  Was a bit bored so I took a drive to the lakeshore on the Hamilton side of the canal.  Well it did not lift my spirits.  The skies were dingy and dark with the winds blowing right off of the lake.  It was freezing.

Managed to fire off a couple of shots with my 300mm lens and was able to capture some unique shots.  First of all, the waves, a mirage of the shoreline between the buildings and the water and lastly the contrast of the skies and an aircraft on landing approach to the Island Airport, a former workplace for me.  I know it was an aircraft because I "zoomed" in on the photo.  (Dec 2016)

Same shot, but processed in Black and White.

Dark Skies

I get my best ideas in a thunderstorm. I have the power and majesty of nature on my side.
Ralph Steadman

A few weeks ago I was able to catch the edge of some violent thunder storms.  I didn't even get wet.  The skies looked wonderful

Closed Flower

An extreme close-up of this plant.  Used my 70mm - 300mm, at the full 300 and as close as I could get.  Notice the "spidey webs" on the thorns and on the right side of the big flower.  (July 2016)

Really Close Up

A different day, a different bush.  This time I found a very deep purple bush and decided to do some extreme close-up shots (Macro).  This shot was with my 60mm macro with an additional 6+ in close up filters.  The camera was about 5 inches from the branch.

Now we can see all of the imperfections on the branches an the flowers.  May 2016.

Lilac for Aurora

Today is my Grand - daughter's Party, her birthday was during the week.  I will be "pruning" this branch on my way up to my daughters home and bring this actual branch for my Grand Daughter for ther to have.  It was a slow start to this years Lilac season, but now they are blooming profusely.  (May 2016)

Yellow Flower by Stream

This morning was very sunny.  I went to one of my secluded spots and found these flowers.  There were 4 or 5 clumps of these, growing on the bank of a tiny stream.  This clump was the most "photogenic" of the group.  Some processing with Onone version 8.5  and voila.  May 2016

Trillium 2016

My first real Trillium hunt for this year. Still not too steady on the legs on hilly spots.  But with the long lens ans some creative cropping , and enhancements, not a bad shot under the circumstances.  (May 2016)

Foggy Day At The Beach

"Personally, I love foggy days. There is just something mysterious about a day that tries to hide so much from you!! "

Foggy Day at the Beach Strip

It was a wonderful sunny day in north Burlington. Headed out to the lakeshore and this is what it looked like at the beach.

Used Viveza to convert to B&W and added some filters.

Milk Weed Plant

A close-up of a Milk Weed plant pod that had recently opened to release its seeds to the wind.  Lets hope that more of these take root so that the Monarchs will be coming back to our area.  (October 2015)

The Grand Red Maple

A grand looking Maple in its last days of brilliant colour.  With a touch of a nearby green tree and a darker Maple.  Shot on Number 1 side Road, with the comments of the many passerby cars that slowed down to tell me "this tree looks like a winner".  NIce to hear from the general public.  (October 2015)

Lower Escarpment View

Fall Leaf

"Nature will bear the closest inspection. She invites us to lay our eye level with her smallest leaf, and take an insect view of its plain".

Henry David Thoreau

Another Macro shot from 2 days ago.  This time, an older Maple Leaf.  The colour is nice, but it has been eaten by insects. It is close to letting go and fluttering to the ground to add to the already fallen leaves. Processed with On1......?  (October 2015)  ....See Ads on this blog page

Ladybug Out For A Walk

This was just posted to my "Macro Monday" group on Google+.     Yes I realize it is not Monday.  The weather forecast does not look good for the next few days.  Besides, Monday is a holiday here in Burlington, and I may have an invite.

I was lazy today and did not get the tripod out, but the shot is not bad for a handheld with my 60mm macro lens. I was inches away from the bug and the "back-button" focus helped a lot as well.  The wobbly knees did help also, but they are getting better.

Processed with On1 8.

So happy "Macro Monday" on Thursday.....!!!!!

First Real Fall Colours

"Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn."
--  Elizabeth Lawrence

Yesterday was not the best of days here in Burlington. It was cloudy dull and grey.  I noticed that some trees are racing with the other ones to show the best of the fall colours even in this type of weather.  This tree was the clear winner for the day.  The others are slowly catching up.  (October 2012)    Processed in On1 10 BETA

Huge oak Tree

"Schoolchildren and older people like the idea of planting trees. For children, it's interesting that an acorn will grow into an oak, and for older people it's a legacy. And the act of planting a tree is not that difficult."

Clive Anderson

This massive Oak tree is located at the east end of Coronation Park on the south shore of Lake Ontario.  The GPS Co-ordinates are 43.15.08.42N and 79.45.29.57W and can be seen on Google Earth, from the top down.  It is a beautiful looking tree, but I had to climb a bit of a hill to frame it....   Had a good sit afterwards as the knees were worn out.  Processed in On1 version 10 BETA  (October 2015)

New Knees

This is about the three point of my double knee replacement.   My first selfie.  Camera was on a tripod ans set for fully automatic, and used the remote trigger.  The tape came off bout 4 day after the shot.  The actually look much better now and I can walk up-stairs with NO walking adid.  Thet still, however get tired and sore by days end.  (October 2015)

Green Burr

Day 2 of my return to being able to walk resulted with this shot.  An extreme closeup of some kind of a burr.  These turn a deep brown when they are ripe.  Used the 70mm - 300mm lens at about 10 feet away from the plant. There was almost no DOF available for this shot.  Processed with On1 software.  We can even see the little spider webs on the plant and the little hooks on the barbs that get caught on your pants and in animal fur.   (Sept 2015)

Small City -- NO MORE

Another shot from my first day out after the "new" knees....

I has been 41 years that I have lived in Burlington Ontario.  Over the past few years I really have started to notice the growth of this city.  When we moved here there were about 70,000 population, now there is about 160,000+

Yesterday I noticed that the view from the Inland Waters property (a Government Agency) has drastically changed.

This is a view from that property towards the NE and across the water bird sanctuary.  The building cranes on the right side are for the new Hospital expansion, which will double the capacity of the hospital.

In the years "before" one could look in this direction and see nothing but homes and empty spaces.......now it is all high rise buildings.  All of the buildings that we see in this shot, are no more than 3 years old.  So much for the small town feeling.

I enhanced the sky with On1 Software, after doing it 5 or 6 times.....it is a snap.  (Sept 2015)

Early Fall Colours

And today was the day.  My first day out after a bit more than a month, waiting for and than having both of my knees replaced.  Could not walk around that much, but enough to get this shot.

I liked it because it shows mostly blooms that only show themselves in the Fall.   The two "fall" asters, the golden rod and some fall daisies. The back ground also shows signs of "fallish" colour.

The trouble was,  I was so eager to get out, I left all of my extra lenses and tripod at home.....oh well.  (Sept 2015)

Milky Way August 2015

It was supposed to a "good" viewing night for the Perseids meteor shower.  But, this is all I was able to capture.  I did not see one meteor that night.  I was using a new location for the shots but it was not very good because of the Hamilton light pollution.  Besides with the bad knees, I kept loosing my balance.  It is difficult to walk around in the pitch black with wonky knees.  So I packed it up and headed home.  Next time I will go to my "proven" spots.    I was using the 10.5mm lens, that is why the curve.   This is about a 170 degree view of the SW sky.   (Aug 2015)

Cold Front

Yesterday, August 2, 2015, late in the afternoon, there was a very "sharp" cold front moving through the area.  I stopped just past a local intersection and captured a number of shots with my 10.5mm Fish-eye lens.  After correcting for the distortion with Photo Shop's lens correction utility, this is what I ended up with...Lost a bit of the sides and a few of the plants are a bit slanted, but overall a good capture.Notice the rain in the lower centre of the photo.  Amazingly we did not get any rain or wind  closer to my home, at least not until later in the evening.  ( Aug 2015)
